16 Dishes from the Borough’s Best Restaurants

For a small coastal village, we have big appetites, and the restaurants in Stonington Borough are happy to serve. There’s an abundance of fresh produce and farm-raised meat; local seafood, harvested from our waters by the Stonington Fishing Fleet, graces many of the menus. Obviously, there are a lot more than 16 dishes we could rave about, but we had to narrow it down! Grab a coffee and a croissant, lunch in a hurry, or plan a celebratory dinner. It’s all right here in our historic village.

Breakwater Stonington Harbor has an extensive menu of delicious staples like the Grilled Chicken Souvlaki Bowl (garlic-herb marinated chicken thighs with rice, salad, hummus, tzatziki, and grilled naan bread), but be sure to check out the specials first. Blood orange season is here and the local scallop crudo with jalapeño, fresh blood oranges, and a sesame vinaigrette is pure sunshine. 66 Water Street, Stonington

The french onion soup with sweet onion, sherry, and a toasted crostini topped with Swiss cheese from Dog Watch is comfort food at its best. Another standout dish is their signature Salmon, baked with a honey glaze and topped with candied pecans. It’s served over sweet potato and brussel sprout hash with bacon and shallots. 194 Water Street, Stonington

Indulge Coffee & Sandwich Co. is one of the best to-go options in the Borough. Their specialty seems to be the sandwich, and they excel at both breakfast and lunch. Generously sized and made with fresh, baked bread, grilled chicken, avocado, spinach, bacon, and chipotle aioli, the 71W is a customer favorite. The Lox Deluxe is premium nova hardwood smoked lox served on a bed of cream cheese with tomato, thinly sliced red onion, and capers served on the bagel of your choice. 17 High Street, Stonington

On any given morning, Macondo is a flurry of activity. There’s lots of space for seating (indoors and out), and the baristas are busy brewing, mixing, frothing, and toasting. There’s always something tempting: an array of croissants, scones, muffins, and a variety of bagels (everything, cinnamon raisin, sesame, pumpernickel). Grab a coffee, espresso, latte, matcha, chai, or smoothie. Our favorite is the Yummy - a mix of banana, peanut butter, almond milk, and flax seeds. 530 Stonington Road, Stonington

Milagro Cafe serves authentic Mexican cuisine and we love their rotating selection of homemade margaritas (think fresh strawberry-banana, lychee, and papaya). They’re open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner serving tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and more, and you never know what you’ll find on the specials menu. This crab tostada and chipotle tortilla-crusted cod were delish. 142 Water Street, Stonington

Noah’s Restaurant is an institution. It’s been open for 44 years and it’s never departed from its mission of using the simplest, purest ingredients to produce meals you’ll love. Open every day except Monday with Happy Hour from 3 - 5 pm, there’s always something good. These truffle chips warmed and tossed in Italian cheeses are addictive — and just $5 — during the happiest of hours. Don’t miss the French Onion Soup, it’s divine. 113 Water Street, Stonington

The artful dishes at Water Street Cafe taste as good as they look and there’s something for every palate and dietary restriction. There are vegetarian dishes, and with a generous assortment of seafood and meat, some pretty phenomenal options for the carnivore. Case in point: the duck breast and petit filet. Be sure to have a cocktail at the bar before your meal — you’re sure to find a friendly face. 143 Water Street, Stonington

Owned and operated by husband and wife team Johan and Abbey, Whitecrest Eatery is located in the Velvet Mill. The menu is well-curated with seafood (oysters, crab, cod, tuna, and lobster), salads, burgers, and sweets. The coconut garlic shrimp originally appeared during Wanderlust, a weekly traveling menu series, but has earned a spot on their regular menu for good reason. Whitecrest Eatery is open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday and brunch on the weekends. 22 Bayview Avenue #14, Stonington
