CULTURE & ORGANIZATIONS
LaGrua Center
The La Grua Center was built on the idea of community engagement through live performances, talks on interesting topics, and art exhibitions. Currently in the works is an effort to go digital with audio streaming of the “best of” Music Matters concerts, and artist recordings who have appeared as part of the series over the years.
All concert and lecture dates are temporarily postponed for the months of April, May, and June, as is Stonington Sounds (June 20), and the Summer Soiree, which has been optimistically rescheduled for Friday, August 21.
Email La Grua’s Program Director Kelli Rochelle ( kelli@lagruacenter.org ) or Lori Robishaw, La Grua’s Executive Director ( lori@lagruacenter.org ). Follow La Grua Center on Facebook and Instagram for the most up-to-date information.
New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS)
New England Science & Sailing Foundation will be offering their award-winning, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-based STEM courses online. Featuring the unique experiential learning that sets NESS apart, these dynamic courses are live, instructor-led programs designed to support the continued education of students, minimizing learning losses and keeping students engaged in their education during these difficult times.
Be sure to keep an eye on NESS’s Facebook and Instagram accounts as well – they will be sharing lots of fun mini-lessons, science experiments, contests, and other ideas to keep students and famlies engaged in learning and connected to their natural environment.
For more information on how you can schedule and/or attend a live NESS STEM class, please email Pam Gibbs ( pgibbs@nessf.org ) or call (860) 535.9362.

Stonington Historical Society
You can’t go inside any of the amazing sites managed by the Stonington Historical Society, but they still have a lot to offer. Of particular interest is a series of Oral Histories on a variety of local subjects they’ve produced which are available online. One of the latest is a video interview with Deborah and Charles Royce on their preservation efforts in the area. The highlight of their work locally is the reconstruction of the Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.
The organization is encouraging the public to call or email with research questions as the Woolworth Library at 40 Palmer Street is closed to the public. They have a variety of history books for sale on their website.
If you must venture outside, the grounds of the Nathaniel Palmer House (40 Palmer St.) and the Old Lighthouse Museum (7 Water Street) are available for leisurely strolls. Sections of the Lighthouse property are blocked off due to the ongoing restoration work, but a pleasing view of the water is still accessible. Please leash your pets and pick up after them.
For more information, call (860) 535-1131, or visit the SHS online.
On a final note, please stay safe. Practice social distancing guidelines and stay healthy! We can’t wait to see you again in Stonington Borough!
